Here are some tips for using polymer clay stamps:
1. Select stamps with deeply etched, high-contrast designs that will transfer well onto polymer clay. Stamps with fine details do not always transfer clearly. Simple geometric patterns, flowers, leaves and other bold designs work best.
2. Consider textured rubber stamps in addition to engraved rubber stamps. Textured stamps can create raised or recessed patterns in the clay.
3. Condition your polymer clay until it's soft and pliable. Firm clay will not imprint as clearly and may damage softer rubber stamps.
4. Roll out the conditioned clay into sheets using a pasta machine or clay roller. Aim for an even thickness of 1/8 inch or less. Thinner sheets will pick up more fine details from the stamps.
5. Apply acrylic paint, ink or embossing ink to your rubber stamps and press firmly onto the clay sheet. Remove stamp and set clay aside while the imprint dries completely.
6. You can also stamp on raw clay and then bake the sheet to harden the imprint. The stamped design will become a permanent texture in the baked clay.
7. Consider stamping on tissue paper, acetate or vellum and transferring the print to your clay sheet using liquid polymer clay as an adhesive. This works well for rubber stamps not specifically designed for polymer clay.
8. Overlap and rotate the placement of stamps on your clay sheet to create an allover pattern. Play around with different stamp orientations for maximum effect.
9. Once baked, the stamped clay sheets can be used as is, cut into shapes or applied to other clay pieces as decoration. Provide a coat of sealant for protection if needed.
10. Clean your rubber stamps immediately after use with warm, soapy water and dry them to avoid permanent ink or clay residue buildup.
